Abstract:
Haumai is described in Gurbani as the biggest obstacle to spiritual progress. Haumai and Naam are declared as antagonists: haumai and Naam cannot dwell together in the heart at the same time. Haumai is often translated as ego. Pride or ahankar is the most common manifestation of haumai, however haumai is more than pride. In fact it is haumai that gives rise to the five vikars or sins, which include hankar (pride) besides kaam (lust), krodh (anger), lobh (greed) and moh(unhealthy attachment). We will look at what haumai is, the challenges it poses for the seeker on the path of Gurmat, and some ways to overcome haumai.

However I wish to highlight that a great saint has given a
latest definition of EGO.
Any Gursikh who has not experienced the BLISS of JOY of NAAM
is suffering from EGO.
The elephant size ego does not allow the electron size soul to move
up from the anatomical heart to MIND through Dasham Dwar as highlighted
in the Gurbani of Guru AMAR DAS Jee Maharaj ,
” Gurudwarey laayyee bhawni Ikna daswan dwar dikhhaya……..”
I feel sad to mention here that marketing power of LOVE of NAAM
is in the hands of Gursikhs who suffer from influence of EGO &
hence have confused the seekers of truth from the west . They only
desire to know the difference between EGO & NAAM.

by over a thousand seekers of truth from the western world but I
feel strongly & desire to share that our own people may desire to

Houmai Karath Bhaekhee Nehee Jaaniaa ||
Acting in egotism, the Lord is not known, even by wearing religious robes
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥
Guramukh Bhagath Viralae Man Maaniaa ||1||
How rare is that Gurmukh, who surrenders his mind in devotional worship. ||1||
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
Ho Ho Karath Nehee Sach Paaeeai ||
By actions done in egotism, selfishness and conceit, the True Lord is not obtained.
ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Houmai Jaae Param Padh Paaeeai ||1|| Rehaao ||
But when egotism departs, then the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||1||Pause||
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥
Houmai Kar Raajae Bahu Dhhaavehi ||
The kings act in egotism, and undertake all sorts of expeditions.
ਹਉਮੈ ਖਪਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥੨॥
Houmai Khapehi Janam Mar Aavehi ||2||
But through their egotism, they are ruined; they die, only to be reborn over and over again. ||2||
ਹਉਮੈ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ॥
Houmai Nivarai Gur Sabadh Veechaarai ||
Egotism is overcome only by contemplating the Word of the Guru’s Shabad.
ਚੰਚਲ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥੩॥
Chanchal Math Thiaagai Panch Sanghaarai ||3||
One who restrains his fickle mind subdues the five passions. ||3||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥
Anthar Saach Sehaj Ghar Aavehi ||
With the True Lord deep within the self, the Celestial Mansion is intuitively found.
ਰਾਜਨੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥੪॥
Raajan Jaan Param Gath Paavehi ||4||
Understanding the Sovereign Lord, the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||4||
